"Don't tell me not to live, just sit and putter! Life's candy and the sun's a ball o' butter! Don't bring around a cloud! Don't rain on my parade! Don't tell me not to fly, I've simply got to! If someone takes a spill it's me and not you! Who told you you're allowed? Don't rain on my parade!"

A Room with a View.
'We literary hacks are shameless creatures. I believe there's no secret of the human heart into which we wouldn't pry.'
The Blind Assassin.
‘Why is it we want so badly to memorialise ourselves? Even when we're still alive. We wish to assert our existence, like dogs peeing on fire hydrants. We put on display our..photographs, our..diplomas..we monogram our linen, we carve our names on trees, we scrawl them on washroom walls. It's all the same impulse. What do we hope from it? Applause, envy, respect? Or simply attention, of any kind we can get? At the very least we want a witness. We can’t stand the idea of our own voices falling silent finally, like a radio running down.’
